Nested on a small tidal island off the coast of Normandy, France, the beautiful community of Mont Saint Michel rises up above the sea and looks down upon the coastline. Having been occupied by the Romans and then the Franks, its first monastic structures were built in the 8th century. As hundreds of years passed, layer upon layer of ecclesiastical structures were built, each adding to the next, culminating in the stunning architecture that stands there today. The sheer enormity of this place, and the collaboration of different peoples throughout history to build such a beautifully varied structure, many elements separate, but now connected, was the primary source of inspiration for me to create this piece.

This tree finds its home in Charleston, South Carolina, and is estimated to be around five hundred years old. My fascination with this subject matter stems from its history - cultural change has swirled under its branches; innumerable transformations have taken place in its time, yet it still stands today, endlessly performing the same perfect duty, evermore connecting the Earth and the heavens. There is something truly beautiful about that.
